Antenatal Checks
All doctors at the Salisbury Medical Group are able to perform antenatal or pregnancy health checks and participate in shared antenatal care with hospital antenatal clinics.

Removal of Skin Cancers and Moles
All our doctors are able to remove simple skin cancers and suspicious moles. This is a simple procedure performed under local anaesthetic. Also see Skin Cancer Checks.

Health Checks
The Salisbury Medical Group is committed to preventative medicine. We are able to perform general health check-ups, including appropriate tests such as cholesterol levels, sugar levels, liver function and kidney function tests. See also Cholesterol Checks, Diabetes Checks, Men's health, Women's Health, Skin Cancer Checks, Health Assessments for the Elderly.

Men's Health
Men frequently neglect getting regular check-ups. We encourage men to have regular and thorough medical check-ups. As well as checking for general disorders such as high cholesterol, diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity, we will tailor the check-up to appropriately meet any specific male problems.

Cholesterol Checks
High cholesterol is extremely common in Australia. All that is required is a simple blood test. It is usually preferable to not have any food for 6 hours before a cholesterol blood test.

Diabetes Checks
There are several hundred thousand people in Australia who have diabetes but do not know that they have it. A simple blood test or urine test can screen for diabetes.

Skin Cancer Checks
All our doctors are experienced at detecting skin cancers and are able to perform skin cancer checks and will ensure appropriate treatment. Simple skin cancers and suspicious moles can be easily removed by any of our doctors. The excision of skin lesions under local anaesthetic is a very simple and routine procedure performed by all our doctors. See also Warts and Sunspots, Cryotherapy.

Warts and Sunspots
These lesions can be treated by "freezing" with liquid nitrogen cryotherapy.

Cryotherapy
Cryotherapy is the use of liquid nitrogen to "freeze" skin problems such as warts and sunspots. Occasionally, very early skin cancers can respond to cryotherapy.

As an extra service to our patients, in special circumstances the doctors at the Salisbury Medical Group perform home visits. Our doctors also perform visits at aged care facilities. See also Nursing Home and Aged Care Visits.

Insurance Medicals and Pre-Employment Medical Examinations
Medical examinations for Insurance purposes and most pre-employment medical examinations can be performed at our practice. A double appointment should be booked for these examinations.

Contraception and Family Planning
Our patients can be counselled on all options for contraception. Also see Hormone Implants, Women's Health.

Nurse
We have practice nurses who are able to perform immunisations, dressings and help our doctors in the management of our patients. Our nurses also run clinics for diabetics, asthmatics and for weight loss advice.

Family Medicine
Family Medicine is another term for General Practice. The Salisbury Medical Group is staffed by general practitioners who are experienced in dealing with the problems of Family Medicine - from childhood medicine through to geriatrics.

Counselling
Counselling is a vital part of general practice, often required in the treatment of physical, emotional and situational problems. If you think you require counselling, a longer appointment may be necessary.

Pathology
For the convenience of our patients, all blood specimens can be collected at the Salisbury Medical Group. St John of God Pathology operates an independent Pathology facility at the front of our building. This is staffed from 8am to 5pm Monday to Friday and 8.30 to 12.30 on Saturday mornings. At other times, our doctors will collect any required specimens.

Care Plans
Our doctors can produce Care Plans for patients with several health problems. It has been recognised that care provided to patients with several problems can be disjointed, often with poor communication between the various professionals involved. The Care Plan is a comprehensive list of the medical problems and an action plan for each problem. A copy of the plan is sent to the appropriate professional involved in the care of the patient, to keep everyone in the picture! The use of Care Plans is encouraged by the Federal Government and is supported by our practice. See also Enhanced Primary Care.

Enhanced Primary Care
The Federal Government has encouraged GP's to provide more comprehensive plans and assessments for the care of elderly patients or patients with several problems. Enhanced Primary Care refers to the use of specific items such as Care Plans and Health Assessments.

Health Assessments for the Elderly
This is an Enhanced Primary Care item, which involves a thorough assessment of a patient's health and their home environment. Patients over the age of 75 are eligible. This assessment is often performed in conjunction with a nurse who will visit the patient at home. The nurse provides a report to the doctor, who then completes the assessment at the surgery. See also Enhanced Primary Care.

Stitching of Wounds
The stitching of cuts and wounds is performed at our surgery. Injuries requiring stitches are treated as urgent cases, which take priority over booked appointments.
